How To Wear Oversized Sweaters and Coats

When it comes to dressing for fall, it’s all about being able to adapt to the ever-changing temperatures — This time of year, one minute you’re bundling up, and the next you are taking layers off. I always find myself wanting to bring a coat out (especially at night), but never want to wear anything that is too bulky or warm. That’s why this year I have invested in a few oversized sweaters and light coats instead, and I am so glad that I did! I love wearing pieces like this because I can easily layer under them, and I don’t find myself having to carry around a big coat when I get too warm.

This season there are a ton of beautiful cardigan-style sweaters and light coats in stores to choose from. I suggest picking up one (or two) pieces that will be versatile staples in your wardrobe, and that you can carry over into spring as well. Go with a sweater or coat that is fairly simple or neutral in tone, and that can be paired with a lot of different colors and looks. I like to buy sweaters and coats that can also be dressed up or dressed down — That way I know that no matter what my outfit is, if I get chilly I know that I have a chic option to stay warm.

Finally, make sure you invest in a sweater or coat that is comfortable! Don’t buy one that doesn’t feel cozy to you … The coats and sweaters that I have bought have especially come in handy when I have been traveling and tI get cold on an airplane. Trust me, you will definitely be happy you bought a piece you are warm and comfortable in!

Here are some of my favorite oversized sweaters and light coat looks for fall:

My 5 Fall Fashion Staples

If you guys are anything like me, a new season rolls around and you can’t wait to adjust your wardrobe! I love the seasonal transitions — Especially changing my closet over from spring and summer, to fall and winter (we are lucky in California and don’t have to adjust four times a year). Fall fashion is just so chic and fun, and I love that I can wear boots and sweaters again!

However, I always have to reign myself in a little because it is not reasonable to be shopping for a new wardrobe every single year. That’s why I like to invest in some key seasonal pieces that I can keep wearing year after year, and that stand the wardrobe test of time. I usually purchase these pieces in black, because it’s a classic fall / winter color that is always in style!

What I really love about my staple pieces is that they are versatile, and can be worn a ton of different ways. They also don’t have to be super expensive —There is so much amazing selection out there for clothing, and you can find beautiful items that aren’t overpriced. It’s more about finding the right piece as opposed to making a big investment!

Here are my top 5 fall wardrobe staples:

  1. A great black sweater — I have several staple black sweaters (one turtleneck, one great cashmere sweater) and they are constantly on rotation in the cooler months. You can dress them up or down, and they always look chic. Look for one that is good quality, and fits you nicely (especially at the waist).
  2. Faux Leather Leggings — These leggings look good with everything! Here is the thing about faux leather leggings though, you can pick them up for cheap at a ton of different stores, but the really cheap ones just don’t hold up! I suggest making a small investment in a higher quality pair. They will stay in your closet for a long time because the fabric will hold up, and they won’t stretch out.
  3. A wool or felt hat — There is a big difference between a summer hat and a fall / winter hat. Pick up a dark colored wool or felt hat, and it will literally be in your closet for years to come. They instantly make a simple outfit look fashionable and put-together.
  4. Black denim — A great pair of black jeans are another worthwhile fall wardrobe investment. Pick up a pair of simple black jeans that you love, and I promise you will get a lot of good use out of them because they can be worn with anything.
  5. A pair of black pumps — A classic pair of black pumps look good with everything! Whether you are headed out to something fancy, or want to feel chic in jeans and a t-shirt, black high heels are always a must-have. They don’t have to be crazy expensive, they just have to be comfortable! Make sure you pick up a pair that fits your feet and once they are broken in, are shoes you actually enjoy wearing!

Sweater Weather: Looks I Love

I love this time of year! The air is cooling down, and that means that it is officially time to put away the summer wardrobe. It also means that it is now sweater weather! Maybe it is because brining out sweaters makes me feel cozy and excited for the season ahead, but I love the fashion transition from summer to fall.

Now, I live in LA, and so we are usually a little behind everyone else in terms of when sweater weather officially lands. So far this month, I have been pairing a light sweater with shorts and boots, or with jeans and open-toed shoes. However, as the weather continues to cool down, I can easily transition all my favorite sweater looks and wear them with jeans and booties.

When I shop for sweaters to add to my fall wardrobe, I try and stick to more neutral colors so that I get the most wardrobe versatility out of them (and can wear them into the spring). I like to buy sweaters that I know will look good with denim, black, white or even with a print skirt. To me, a good sweater can sit in your closet almost all year around, and can be layered and paired with a number of different pieces.

Below are some of my favorite sweater picks this fall! I love all of these looks because they are versatile, and can look good worn any number of ways!

Let me know if you guys buy any of these looks, or how you like to wear sweaters this season! I’m always looking for new ideas on how to style a sweater!

My Favorite Occasion Dresses This Season

I love the chance to get dressed up! Whether it is for a wedding, a party or for a work event, I always jump at the chance to put on a cocktail dress and feel glam for the night. The whole process is fun for me — From finding the perfect dress, to doing my hair and makeup, and putting on a pair of heels.

Whenever I have a reason to get all dressed up, I get so excited to start the search for the perfect outfit for the occasion. This season, I have a few fun events happening that call for cocktail / formal attire, and I am already on the hunt for the perfect dresses (other than the one I am wearing in the photos above, which I adore). While I can definitely get behind a simple and classic silhouette, I am way more into a dress that also has some kind of wow factor and that highlights my personal style. The dress doesn’t need to be crazy expensive or over-the-top; but small details or embellishments like a dramatic sleeve, a sheer panel or a perfectly placed ruffle are things I look for to make the dress special.

Above all, I always want to find a dress that suits my personality, and that I feel good in. I think that confidence is the most attractive thing that a woman can wear, and if you can find a dress that you feel like a million bucks in, you will light up the room!

With fall right around the corner, I have started shopping and scoping out some new pieces for my wardrobe … And I keep finding myself drawn to denim looks! I am definitely someone who believes you can never have enough pairs of jeans in the closet. Denim is just one of those timeless and classic wardrobe staples that you can’t go wrong with.

The past few seasons, designers have been putting out a lot more variety of denim — From overalls making a comeback, to denim blouses and bomber jackets (like the one from Lucky Brand that I am wearing above), there are a lot more styles of denim to choose from these days beyond just jeans.

Below are some of my favorite looks for fall. From a great pair of go-to jeans (Madewell is a one brand that never disappoints), to some more trendy pieces like two-tone jeans — I can’t wait to keep adding to my ever-growing denim collection and sport some of these looks this coming season!

How do you guys like to wear denim? Let me know what pieces you have your eye on for fall!

Making Your Bedroom A Sanctuary

Your bedroom should be your sanctuary! We spend a lot of time in our bedrooms, so they should be a place that makes you feel peaceful. It’s also the one room in your home that should be totally devoted just to you (a large feat if you have children!).

For me, my bedroom is a place where I recharge both mentally and physically. After a long day, I feel so good walking into my bedroom knowing that I can unwind and relax in there. And in the morning, I wake up inspired to start my day. Making sure that my bedroom was a sanctuary was a very deliberate effort. I added design and décor touches that both looked good, and made me feel calm and relaxed! These little décor additions don’t have to be elaborate or overly expensive to make your room feel like an oasis.

Here are my tips on transforming your bedroom into a very dreamy space:

  • Keep the colors neutral and light — Bold colors can be way too stimulating and do not promote a relaxing vibe! If you do add color, make sure that it is in little doses. A new paint color can do wonders for changing the tone of your bedroom.
  • Add throw pillows — I will admit, having so many throw pillows on the bed is little bit of extra work to take off at night and then put on again each morning — But they make all the difference in creating a space that is visually appealing!
  • Make sure there are lots of soft things — Ideally, your sheets and bedding should be super soft and comfortable! I also like adding additional texture to my room by having a fur blanket draped over the end of my bed. It’s nice to cozy up with, and it also adds depth and balance to the design of the room.
  • Select artwork and photos that make you happy — I have one wall of my bedroom full of pictures that hold really special memories for me. Each time I look at the photos, they make me feel happy and blessed! I like to place my photos and artwork in matching frames that complement the décor of the room.
  • Invest in furniture — There are so many amazing furniture options out there these days! Even Amazon sells some pretty awesome pieces. Invest in a proper headboard and night tables. These pieces anchor the room, and will instantly elevate the design.
  • Add flowers — Fresh or faux, flowers are one of those little design touches that really brighten up a room. I make it a habit to always keep fresh flowers in my bedroom because they make me smile every time I look at them.
  • Pick a calming scent — Candles create ambiance! Pick a scent that is relaxing and that you can’t get enough. I love that my bedroom has signature scent.
  • Add a couple of decorative objects — You don’t want to go overboard here, but by adding a couple decorative home décor objects, you will add personality and individuality to your room! A mirrored tray is a great place to start if you aren’t sure what to add because it is functional (I place perfume on mine), and looks beautiful sitting on top of my dresser.

How do you guys make your room a sanctuary?
