how to wrap a gift

I know I’m not alone when I say, I love gift giving! There is just something so special about seeing the joy in someone’s eyes when they open a gift that you have thoughtfully picked out. I genuinely enjoy searching for a special and meaningful gift — The whole process always gets me to focus on that person’s personality and character, and dig deep to find that perfect present … As an added personal bonus, I also find myself thinking of all the reasons I am thankful to have that person in my life as I am searching for a great gift for them.

Call me crazy, but I also enjoy wrapping gifts! I believe that the wrapping is an extension of the gift. The presentation adds that final personal touch, and I think it makes it even more special. That’s why I am so excited to share with you all my tips for wrapping a beautiful gift — And just in time for the holidays!

I hope that this guide helps you all step up your wrapping game! If you try my tips, let me know! I would love to see how your wrapping turns out.

What you will need:

  1. Wrapping paper (3 different patterns … I used Sugar Paper for Target)
  2. Scissors
  3. Double sided tape
  4. Twine
  5. Gift tag

  1. Start wrapping your gift like you traditionally would. Place the gift, top-side down, in the center of the wrapping paper. Wrap the paper around the gift until it completely surrounds it. Cut the wrapping paper, leaving a little extra (about an inch), but not too much (don’t waste the paper!).
  2. When you are folding the long edges up, start by taping one edge to the box. With the other long edge, pull tightly, and fold the end under so the crease runs along the edge of the box and you get a clean line. Line the edge of the box with double-sided tape and then press the creased paper onto the tape.
  3. Next, fold in the smaller ends of the paper by laying the gift on its side. Starting at one end, fold a short side toward the center of the box, creating a crisp, pointed end at the corner of each long end of the paper, and tape down. Repeat this step for the remaining short ends on each side of the gift. Fold the bottom flap up on each side and secure with double-sided tape. Then fold the top flaps down, securing again with double-sided tape.

The big takeaway from these steps is to use double-sided tape! It will make your gift look much cleaner.

gift wrapping tips

  1. Once the gift is wrapped, you can start decorating! I like to pick 3-4 different types of paper that have different patterns, but are complimentary. I start by cutting two strips of wrapping paper from 2 of the different wrapping paper patterns. Make sure your strips are slightly different sizes (like in the image above).
  2. Take the first and largest strip and wrap around the gift, securing it on the bottom side with tape
  3. Repeat the above step with the 2nd To add texture, I suggest ripping the side to create a raw edge look.
  4. Next, I create a bow with the 3rd patterned piece that you cut out. This isn’t as hard as you may think! Here is a great how-to video on making a wrapping paper bow.
  5. Last, add the name tag! Use a thin twine and a fairly plain tag that matches the theme of the wrapping paper. I like to write the names big for a clean look!
